One of my favorite parts about visiting colleges is uncovering hidden gems.
These are the unique degrees like Viticulture (that's the study of grapes) and Wine Technology or Turf Management Studies. It's the unique academic calendar that allows students to immerse themselves in one course at a time (and still graduate in four years). It's the curriculum that is centered around reading and discussing great books. For students who want to go to college while aspiring to be hairdressers, golf course manager or a theme park engineer- there's a college program for that.
Finding those hidden gems and then matching students with those special programs is what I love most about what I do. It's tough for 16 and 17 year-olds to decide "what they want to do" (and many adults can't answer that query!), but helping those teenagers open their minds and explore options and opportunities is a gift that truly pays off.
